My personal art practice has always been a crucial part of my life. From a young age I gravitated toward the trance-like state that is found in creating, focusing inward and connecting mind to body. The passion to create grew from a place of personal retreat to a medium for connection with others.
The way we interact with the objects around us shapes our sense of self. Society is good at filling our senses with ideas of consumption, leaving little space for connecting to what is real. My sculptural work in particular is an expression of pushing back on normative ideas of bodies and gender roles. I believe that in creating tangible objects that represent a different way of seeing and interacting with the world, we change the narrative of what is real and valuable. When we include these representations of a different narrative in our lives, for example, having body positive art in our living spaces, we weave that narrative into our minds and expel untruths about what is beautiful and normal.
It is my hope for those who have my work in their homes to feel connection with their sense of self, and find moments for authentic relationships.
